5. 귀신을 쫓는 할로윈 호박의 유래
Halloween is celebrated on October 31.
- celebrate: 기념하다, 축하하다, 찬양하다
Families carve pumpkins into scary faces and place them on their porches.
- carve A into B: A에 새겨서 B를 만들다
- porch: 현관, 베란다(veranda)
People call these carved pumpkins jack-o'-lanterns. What is the origin of this peculiar custom? According to one Irish legend, there once was a greedy farmer by the name of Stingy Jack. He tricked the devil and turned it into a coin.
- turn A into B: A를 B로 바꿔 놓다, A를 B가 되게 하다
cf. turn into: ...으로 변하다/바뀌다
He kept the coin next to a silver cross to prevent it from turning back into the devil. When Stingy Jack died, the devil placed a curse on him to seek revenge.
- place a curse: 저주를 걸다

- seek revenge (against): ...에(게) 복수하다
The devil forced him to wander the earth at night. To light his way, Jack had to rely on a candle inside a hollowed-out turnip.
- hollow STH out: ...의 속을 움푹하게 파내다, ...을 파내어 만들다
- turnip: 순무
The Irish referred to this ghost as 'Jack of the Lantern,' or simply jack-o'-lantern. Years later, Americans began to use pumpkins instead of turnips to "scare off" the ghost because they were easier to carve and more available.
