10. 알랭 드 보통의 『여행의 기술』

 

If you are studying for the TOEFL or the GRE, you are probably struggling to memorize many difficult English vocabulary words.

 - study for: ...을 목표로 공부하다

 

There is a more pleasant way to learn new words. Alain de Botton, a famous writer and TV announcer, has written books that include many words deemed to be essential for those taking such exams.

 - deem = consider: ...로 여기다/생각하다

 

By simply reading and enjoying his books, you will gradually strengthen your vocabulary. In addition, because he has written books on a variety of subjects, you should be able to find at least one that is interesting to read. For example, The Art of Travel, one of his bestselling books from 2002, will introduce you to many exotic corners of the world, but what appeals to us most is his distinctive way of describing his trips.

 - corner/corners = region: 지방, 지역

 cf. corner: 모퉁이/모서리, 구석, 외딴곳/변두리

 cf. (a) corner: 궁지

 - appeal to: 흥미를 일으키다, 매력이 있다, ...에 호소하다

 - distinctive = characteristic: 독특한, 특색 있는

 

Although based on his actual experiences, the book is filled with many personal reflections and philosophy. On Love, published in 1993, also can be a very good reading material.
