According to many written accounts, a diamond never breaks. After all, a diamond is the hardest natural substance on Earth. It has a hardness of 10 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness.

 - on the scale of: ...의 척도로, ...의 규모로

 - on the scale of A to B: A부터 B의 척도로

If you hit a diamond with a hammer, however, you can shatter it. A diamond has four directions of cleavage.

 - cleavage: [광물] 벽개(劈開)(면), 쪼개짐/분할, 분열

A diamond has four directions of cleavage. If you strike even one of these four planes of cleavage, it will break easily.

 - plane: (평)면, 평평한, 사고의 차원/수준, 비행기

Therefore, we must be careful in handling diamonds. A skilled jeweler will prevent any of these planes from being struck during the diamond-cutting process. There is another important fact about diamonds: Their 'hardness' refers to their resistance to scratching.

 - refer to: ...와 관련 있다, ...을 나타내다, ...에 적용되다, ...을 언급하다

That is why we find diamond-tipped drills and saws used as tools at industrial sites.

 - tip: 뾰족한 끝
