8. 햄버거에는 왜 햄이 없는 걸까?

 

 

Have you ever wondered why hamburgers are not made from ham?

 - be made from: 원료/재료로 만들어진/완성된 → 일반적으로 사용됨

 cf. be made of: 재료로 만들어진 → 재료의 원래 모습을 알아볼 수 없음

 

Actually, the history of hamburgers has nothing to do with ham. Instead, it is closely linked to the German city of Hamburg. As the story goes, in the 1800s, a German merchant traveled to Asia, where he came upon bands of nomadic Tartars.

타타르족

 

The tartars held a feast using meat. By the time they returned home on horseback, the meat beneath their saddles had softened and broken into pieces. The Tartars would then shape the pieces into patties and eat it after seasoning the meat.

The German merchant brought the concept back to his hometown of Hamburg, where locals minced the meat and mixed it with onions and salt to create a "Hamburg steak." Later on, the food was introduced to America by Jewish immigrants from Germany.
