2. '메르세데스 벤츠'가 소녀의 이름이라고?

 

In the early 20th century, Germans Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz were two of the leading pioneers in the automotive industry. The Daimler and Benz companies merged with each other in 1926, and Mercedes-Benz was launched.

 - merge: 합병/병합하다, 합치다, 융합하다, 어우러지다

 

So why wasn't it called Diamler-Benz instead? Actually, Mercedes was an Austrian girl. Her father was a successful businessman and trader. He purchased cars from the Daimler factory. One day, he put his daughter's name on a new car model.

 - put name on: ...에 이름을 붙이다

 

People were enthusiastic about it, so he placed a lot of orders and secured an international franchise contract.

 - enthusiastic (about): ...에 대해 열렬한/열광적인

 - place an order: 주문하다

 - secure: 얻어내다, 확보/획득하다, 안전하게 지키다

 - franchise: 가맹점 영업권, 독점 판매권, 체인점

 

Since then, Daimler agreed to use the girl's name on his company's cars.
