4. 니콘 카메라가 해군의 무기였다고?
Nowadays we can see fancy Nikon digital cameras hanging from people's necks almost everywhere.
- fancy: 값비싼, 고급의, 화려한, 복잡한
- hang (from): 위에서 아래로 매달리다
But did you know that the Japanese company was originally an optical weapons instrument manufacturer? The company mainly produced precision optical devices like telescopes, binoculars, and range finders.
- precision: 정밀한, 정확
- range finder: 거리 측정계, 거리계
Its role was to supply equipment to the Japanese military. The Imperial Japanese Navy then asked Nikon to develop cameras. The Japanese were trying to reduce their dependence on France for such equipment. Nikon began to design and build specialized cameras for military use.

They dealt with many technically demanding projects during the process of creating optical lenses for the navy.

Cameras for the consumer market were first manufactured after the Second World War.
