in case / in case of / in the case of 등의 표현을 이해하기 위해서는, case (noun)의 주요 의미를 함께 살펴 볼 필요가 있다. (편의상 덜 중요하게 사용되는 의미는 제외하였다.)

1. 사례(事例)(example) [countable]

 1-a. 특정한 상황 또는 발생한 것의 사례

 1-b. 질병의 사례/환자

 

▶1-a와 1-b는 공통적으로 case of의 표현을 사용한다.

  e.g. There were 16 cases of damage to cars in the area. 

  e.g. There are thousands of new cases of AIDS in Africa every year.

 

▶1-a의 경우에는 다음과 같은 표현이 사용된다.

 ▷in the case of something: ...의 사례에서 → ...에 있어서

    e.g. The amount of fruit in fruit juices must be 6% in the case of berries and 10% in the case of fruits.

 ▷in some/many/most etc cases: 몇몇/많은/대부분의 사례

 ▷a case in point: 딱 맞는 사례, 좋은 예

 ▷a classic case: 전형적인 사례

 

2. 상황(狀況)/경우(境遇)/형편(形便)(situation) [countable usually singular]
   : 특히 사람/집단에 영향을 미치는 상황

 

▶2와 관련해서 사용되는 표현에는 다음과 같은 것들이 있다.

 ▷(just) in case (1) ...의 경우에 대비하여

    e.g. Take an umbrella, in case it rains.

 ▷(just) in case (2) [AmE] 만약 ...하면 = if

    e.g. In case I'm late, start without me.

 ▷in case of something: 특정한 상황이 발생할 경우에

    e.g. In case of fire, break the glass.

 ▷in any case: 상황이 어떠하든 간에, 어쨌든

    e.g. Traffic may be bad, but in any case we'll be there in time for dinner.

 ▷in somebody's case: ...의 경우에는

 ▷in this case: 이 경우에는

 ▷in that case: 그런 경우라면, (만약) 그렇다면

 ▷in which case: 그런 경우에는, 그렇다면

    e.g. He won't want to eat it unless he's really hungry, in which case he'll eat almost anything.

 ▷it's a case of something: [spoken] ...의 상황/경우에 해당하다, 이른바 ...의 경우이다

    e.g. It really is a case of "no news is good news."

 ▷it is the case (that): ...의 경우에 해당하다, ...가 맞다

    e.g. It may be the case that the scheme will need more money.

    e.g. We tend to think of these people as untrustworthy, but that is not the case.

 

3. 이유(理由)/논거(論據)(reason/argument) [countable usually singular]
   : 무언가가 발생하거나 이루어져야 하는 이유들의 집합

 

▶3과 관련해서 사용되는 표현에는 다음과 같은 것들이 있다.

 ▷case against: ...에 반대하는 이유/논거

    e.g. The case against lowering educational standard is overwhelming.

 ▷case for: ...에 찬성하는 이유/논거

    e.g. Calvin makes a good case for this unpopular policy in his article.

    e.g. There is a strong case for getting parents more involved in the school's activities.

 ▷put forward a case: (논거를 제시하여) 주장하다

 

 

4. 소송(訴訟)/사건(事件)/범죄(犯罪)(law/crime) [countable]

 4-a. 법원에서 다루어질 문제 

 4-b. 법적 다툼에서 상대방을 공격할/이길 수 있는 모든 이유/논거

 4-c. 누가 범죄를 저질렀는지 경찰에 의해 다루어질 필요가 있는 사건(들)

 

▶4-a와 관련해서 사용되는 표현에는 다음과 같은 것들이 있다.

 ▷case against: ...을 상대로 한 소송

 

▶4-b와 관련해서 사용되는 표현에는 다음과 같은 것들이 있다.

 ▷have a case: 논거가 충분하다

 

▶4-c와 관련해서 사용되는 표현에는 다음과 같은 것들이 있다.

 ▷case of: ...에 대한 사건

 ▷on the case: 해당 사건을 조사/수사 중인
