존 던


어느 사람이든지 그 자체로써 온전한 섬은 아닐지니, 모든 인간이란 대륙의 한 조각이며 또한 대양의 한 부분이어라. 만일에 흙덩어리가 바닷물에 씻겨 내려가게 될지면, 유럽땅은 또 그만큼 작아질지며, 만일에 모랫벌이 그렇게 되더라도 마찬가지며, 그대의 친구들이나 그대 자신의 영지가 그렇게 되어도 마찬가지어라. 어느 누구의 죽음이라 할지라도 나를 감소시키나니, 나란 인류 속에 포함되어 있는 존재이기 때문이라. 누구를 위하여 종은 울리나ㅡ이를 위하여 사람을 보내지는 말지라. 종은 바로 그대를 위해 울리기에.

No man is an island,
Entire of itself.
Each is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manor of thine own
Or of thine friend's were.
Each man's death diminishes me,
For I am involved in mankind.
Therefore, send not to know
For whom the bell tolls,
